Roads in the Philippines vary greatly in quality, with those in and around large towns and cities tending to be of a much higher standard than those in more rural regions. Typhoon season can make many roads impassable. Bus services run out of most towns and cover many destinations, as well as jeepneys – shared taxis for around 14 people. Normal taxis, as well as motorbike taxis are available widely, and fees should be agreed before travel or the meter used to avoid extortionate fees. Rail services in the country consist of one line which runs from San Fernando, Pampagna to Legazpi city, Albay with a few trains per day. Internal flights are available and flights can be chartered from a number of companies. There are many, many passenger ferry services between islands and both standards and prices vary hugely – attention should be paid before agreeing to travel, as some ships can be downright unsafe.
